艺术家成了某种逃避现实，逃避责任的身份。导演很明显借莉拉申请签证时的对话讽刺了某些所谓艺术家，签证官说你要有公开展览的证明我才能给你延期，而不是你说自己是艺术家就可以。李伍德就是那个所谓艺术家，巨婴，没有责任感，最多只能说有些艺术才华，而远非艺术家。莉拉确实还可以，最后五分钟，李伍德在无聊闲逛，莉拉在失意中展示了她的影像创作，也是全片最艺术的部分了。
